Northern Ballet announce autumn plans

Northern Ballet autumn season includes revivals of David Nixon’s Beauty & the Beast and Jean-Christophe Maillot’s extremely stylish Les Ballets de Monte Carlo production of Romeo and Juliet.

The season gets underway in early September with the welcome return of Nixon’s Wuthering Heights at the West Yorkshire Playhouse in Leeds. It may have Yorkshire writ through it in capital letters, but the ballet has not been performed in Leeds for over ten years.

A national tour then gets underway with Jean-Christophe Maillot’s Romeo and Juliet at the Sheffield Lyceum in mid-September. It’s a beautifully, touching and modern interpretation of what it means to be young and in love, and of the tragedy that unfolds. Romeo and Juliet will also tour to Canterbury, Woking, Bradford and Belfast.

A world of fairies, sprites and goblins awaits from October in Nixon’s Beauty & the Beast. Danced to a score comprised of excerpts, including from music by Saint-Säens, Bizet and Debussy, Beauty & the Beast tours to Norwich, Nottingham, Newcastle and Leeds.

Northern Ballet’s popular children’s ballets continue. The company will perform Tortoise & the Hare in Woking and Bradford before holding the world première of Goldilocks & the Three Bears at the Stanley & Audrey Burton Theatre in Leeds on October 24. Choreographed by Nicola Gervasi, the new ballet can also be seen this autumn in Nottingham, Newcastle and Southampton with an extensive tour promised for 2017.
